Summary: Significant rainfall amounts from 4 to 15 inches across Central and Southeast Texas over past 7 days has resulted in flooding across the region.
A pattern of widespread rainfall, with localized intense cells, has effected much of the State of Texas over the past week. Rainfall accumulations range from 5 to over 15 inches during the period May 10 to May 17. The pattern is expected to continue into the weekend where an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain is predicted.
Flash flooding, especially in urban streams in the Austin and Houston metropolitan areas, has resulted in property damage, road flooding, and school closures.
Currently, 30 sites are above NWS minor flood stage, 13 are above NWS moderate flood stage, and 2 are above NWS major flood stage. Discharge measurements have been made at 50 sites since May 3, 2019. At least 3 peak-of-records have been set at sites with more than 5 years of record. Downstream sites on the Brazos, Colorado, and Trinity River are all expected to peak over the weekend. No gages have been damaged during the event.
USGS has been in contact with local and state cooperators, and with the National Weather Service.
