PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (KS) Heavy rainfall causing flooding throughout Southeast Kansas

Summary: A stalled out frontal system traversing Southeastern Kansas has brought several inches of rain over the past few days with minor to moderate flooding occurring and forecast.

Heavy rainfall has been occurring along a frontal boundary with additional rainfall expected through midday Thursday along and south-east of I-35. Rainfall totals are generally in the 3-4 inch range with local amounts of up to 6 inches falling in some locations. Current forecasts are calling for an additional inch of rainfall over the next 24-hours landing on some of the most impacted areas.

No peaks of record are anticipated as a result of this event. The major systems affected are the Verdigris River, Neosho River, Marais Des Cygnes River, Spring River, and the lower Arkansas River. Many other streams are experiencing elevated streamflow volumes but are not anticipated to reach flood stage.

Three crews are deployed to make high flow discharge measurements along with two sampling crews. No streamgages have been damaged or destroyed as a result of flooding.
