PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NE NH) USGS Flood Response in Nebraska

Summary: USGS crews responding to flooding in Nebraska

Heavy rains on snowpack followed by additional heavy snow ice jams are causing flooding across Nebraska.

Currently, there are 33 streamgages near or above flood stage. All basins in the state are affected. Many are in minor to moderate flood stage with several in major flood stage. Several are near or expected to exceed stages for period of record. There are reports of small dam failures including the Spencer Dam on the Niobrara River just above the US Highway 281 bridge, which was destroyed.

Nine streamgages have been destroyed and one ADCP lost.

Five USGS (10 people) crews made over 35 high-flow measurements since yesterday. 2 crews are working on emergency streamgage repairs.

USGS staff worked with the National Weather Service, USACOE, and the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources through briefings several times a day.
