Summary: USGS crews responding to flooding in Central Midwest
Recent rains, snowmelt, and ice jams are causing flooding in the Central Midwest (IA-IL-MO) area. Currently, there are 105 streamgages with readings above flood stage. Many are in minor to moderate flood stage with several, primarily in IA, in major flood stage. The ice jams are making it difficult or impossible to measure the discharge at many of the sites. This event will extend into next week as the ice moves out and the water moves downstream. Some sites are expected to peak near or above record stages such as the Missouri River at Brownville, NE and the Rock River at Joslin, IL.
USGS crews made over 30 high-flow measurements yesterday and expect to make a similar number of measurements today. USGS staff worked with the National Weather Service Missouri River Basin Forecast Office yesterday on rating concerns. At this time, no additional support is needed.
