Summary: Water levels have exceeded National Weather Service Moderate Flood levels at several sites and Major Flood levels at two sites after heavy rain this week in the Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center area
Rainfall totals during the past couple of days have exceeded 3 inches in much of North Mississippi, Northwest Alabama, and Central Tennessee with totals exceeding 6 inches in parts of North Mississippi. Totals for the past 7 days have exceeded 10 inches in parts of North Mississippi.
No peaks of record have been exceeded. However, three sites in North Mississippi currently have the fourth highest flows for periods of record ranging from 69 to 80 years.
No streamgages have been destroyed. One stream gage used by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for River Operations in Tennessee on the Elk River (03582000) was malfunctioning but was repaired this morning.
Currently 6 crews are in the field making discharge measurements including one crew which is making flow measurements at various sites on the Cumberland River for the Nashville District of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
The LMGWSC has been working closely with the USACE and TVA on monitoring needs during this event.
