PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IA) Flash flooding

Date: Sat, 06 Oct 2018 16:31:10 EDT

Summary: USGS crews respond to localized flash flooding in Eastern Iowa

From 4 to 6 inches of rain has fallen overnight and this morning in and around the Iowa City, IA area in east central Iowa, causing localized flash flooding overnight and into this morning. The results of this is that 16 gages are above NWS Flood Stage. With all of the rain of the past month within the same river basis the water bodies are quick to react to rain events. The measurements today were needed to help validate USGS ratings at high flows on these tributaries to help the Corps of Engineers, National Weather Service and local Emergency managers make decisions to manage these already taxed river basins.

No streamgages have been damaged or destroyed.

Two 2-person crews are out measuring, and a few crews may need to be out the remainder of the weekend. We are in an extremely wet weather pattern and crews are on stand bye as we continue to experience flood conditions.

We are in close communication with partners, especially those in NWSChat.
