Summary: Continued flooding in North and South Carolina from Hurricane Florence record rainfall.
North Carolina and South Carolina received state record rainfall from Hurricane Florence which made landfall September 14. North Carolina received 34" and South Carolina received 23.6" All of the rivers in North and South Carolina are currently receding with the exception of the Waccamaw River in South Carolina, which will crest tonight (Tuesday). Major flooding is occurring in Horry and Georgetown Counties (SC). Preliminary analyses indicate annual exceedance probabililty of 0.002 at 15 gages and 0.005 at 3 gages. 16 gages in North Carolina and 5 gages in South Carolina recorded period of record peaks. Highest measurements of record have been made at 30 gages (14 in NC. 16 in SC.) 43 fatalities have been attributed to Hurricane Florence and the ensuing flooding.
22 gages have been damaged or destroyed. 43 SAWSC employees are currently working on storm sensor retrievals and high water mark documentation. SAWSC is in continuous communication with NWS, FEMA, State EMDs and DOTs, USACE, and local law enforcement.
