PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (MD) High river flows and flooding in western Maryland

Summary: Radar-estimated rainfall totals ranging from 5 to over 8 inches in the past three days have caused high river flows and flooding across much of western Maryland.

Soaking rains were experienced across most of Maryland over the past weekend. The heaviest rainfall totals nearly nine inches) were experienced in Frederick County and Carroll County, but totals exceeding four inches were common west of the Chesapeake Bay. Peak river flows in major tributaries, such as Monocacy River and Conococheague Creek, to the Potomac River in the affected area were comparable to those experienced in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Two USGS crews totaling six staff deployed on Sept. 10, 2018 to measure flows in the area.
