Summary: Heavy precipitation beginning the evening of September 1 and continuing through early-day September 5 caused flash flooding and road closures in many parts of Southeast Nebraska.
Rainfalls of 7-10 inches in Southeast Nebraska caused flash flooding and minor flooding in the Salt Creek, Little Blue River and Big Blue River Basins. One USGS crew was deployed on September 3 (Labor Day), three crews on September 4, and three crews on September 5 to make discharge measurements (26 direct measurements, two check measurements, no indirects needed). Additionally, a crew was sent out on September 5 to repair two streamgages having issues with telemetry and one streamgage where the pressure line was ripped out. Five streamgages went above minor flood stage. Measurements were needed to verify the stage-discharge relation at streamgages due to backwater from the late-summer bank vegetation.
Two USGS crews will be dispersed tomorrow (September 6) to make recession measurements due to changes in backwater conditions.
Information has been communicated via phone and emails to the USACE, NWS, and the Nebraska Natural Resources Districts.
