Summary: USGS crews from the Central Midwest Water Science Center respond to major flooding in IA and IL

Over the past 4 days, several slow moving and very productive thunderstorms have rolled across northern IA and IL on already saturated soils, resulting in major flooding. Over 6" fell in 24 hrs in the Rock River basin in northwest IA, and similar amounts in northern IL around Rockford. Currently, 17 gages in IA, and 12 in IL are above NWS Flood Stage. In IA, one Peak of Record has been measured (Floyd River)so far, and 5 crews are measuring (Rock, Floyd, Ocheydan, and Raccoon basins), and we have heard of some evacuations around Rock Valley, IA. In IL, 4 crews are measuring in rural northern IL, but also in heavily urbanized Chicago where several roads were impacted last night. Some more rain is expected today, but according to NWS AHPS, most sites are at or near their predicted peak for this event.
