PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IN) Major category flooding in NW Indiana

Summary: Heavy rain over northwest Indiana to bring major flooding over the coming week.

Over 2” of rain have fallen across portions of northwest Indiana within the past 24 hours as a band of heavy rain continues to move over the area. Moderate flood conditions are occurring in the Kankakee, Iroquois, and Calumet River Basins with National Weather Service forecasts indicating an increase to major category within the next 24 hours.

The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center, Indianapolis office, has 2 crews (4 people) out today making discharge measurements in the Calumet River Basin near Chicago. More crews are expected to join the response tomorrow. All gages are currently operational. Contact with the National Weather Service and the US Army Corps of Engineers is ongoing.
