Summary: Local stream and coastal flooding on Long Island New York.

Local stream and coastal flooding occurred overnight on Long Island, New York as a result of 2 to 5 inches of rain during the past 24 hours. Because of the very dry antecedent conditions across Long Island, stream flooding has been minor, receded quickly, and was limited to the more flashy streams like Valley Stream in southwestern Nassau County.

Very strong southerly winds and significant precipitation runoff contributed to some locally moderate to major coastal flooding overnight along the back bays of southern Long Island. USGS gages at Watch Hill (01305575) reached the NWS major flood elevation, and the gage at Sayville (01306402) just fell short of major flooding. Many other USGS gages along the south shore reached the NWS moderate flood elevation overnight.

Currently one team from the Coram, NY office is out making discharge measurements on the receding streams.
