PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (FL) heavy rainfall in southwest Florida causes flooding

Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2017 12:29:16 EDT

Summary: USGS crews respond to high flows and flooding in southwest Florida due to continued heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall is causing moderate to major flooding in southwest Florida from Naples to Bradenton. Nearly 4 additional inches of rain has fallen, making 12 inches of total rainfall for this event. Many coastal streams in the area and the Manatee River and lower Peace River basins are experiencing moderate to near major flooding.

Today, 21 people are measuring flows at 22 stations. At the time of this report, five stations are above NWS flood stage, several peaks of record measurements are expected, and at least one station will need a rating extension. Stages at two other stations are above the ratings and crews are heading there now. To date, no gages have been damaged.

Conditions will be monitored for the next few days to determine if additional measurements are needed. Because stages at many stations are still rising today, additional measurements are expected tomorrow.
