PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (FL) heavy rainfall in southwest Florida causes flooding

Date: Sun, 27 Aug 2017 13:55:22 EDT

Summary: USGS crews respond to high flows and flooding in southwest Florida due to continuing heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall is causing moderate to major flooding in southwest Florida from Naples to Bradenton. Since Thursday afternoon, about 8 inches of rainfall was recorded at the NWS station at Page Field in Ft Myers and at the USGS station at Bradenton, and 3 to 4 inches of additional rainfall is predicted through Sunday. Many coastal streams in the area and the Manatee River and lower Peace River basins are experiencing moderate to near major flooding.

Today, seven people are measuring flows at 6 stations. At the time of this report, two peaks of record were measured, and ratings were extended for three stations. Stages at two other stations are above the ratings and crews are heading there now. To date, no gages have been damaged.

Conditions will be monitored for the next few days to determine if additional measurements are needed. Because stages at many stations are still rising today and projected to continue rising for the next couple of days, additional measurements are expected tomorrow at the least.
