PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IL) Flooding in the Chicago Area

Summary: USGS crews respond to near record floods in the Chicago area.

During the evening of July 11, 2017, 5 to 7 inches of rain fell in the Chicago area over already saturated ground, primarily affecting the Fox and Des Plaines River basins. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts for the Des Plaines River is for near to record level flooding at five streamgages operated by the USGS. All USGS streamgages in this area are operational. Currently seven USGS streamgages are above the NWS Flood Stage.

Two USGS crews have been to deployed to the Des Plaines River basin to make streamflow measurements and ensure proper streamgage operation. Three individuals are supporting the event in the office to extend rating curves and communicate with stakeholders. Measurements are planned tomorrow as well. Communication is being made with the NWS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and emergency managers primarily through NWSChat.
