Summary: Flooding in Upstate New York
Minor to major flooding occurred in several basins in central and
east-central New York Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning (July 1-2)
as a result of 3-5 inches of rain in a few hours. The rapid runoff was
further magnified by wet antecedent conditions from previous rainfall
the past several days.
One USGS streamgage reached NWS major flood category in the Oneida Creek
basin. Two USGS streamgages reached NWS moderate flood category along
the West Canada Creek and Metawee River basins. In addition, five USGS
streamgages exceeded NWS minor flood category in central & east-central
New York. Streamflows at most USGS streamgages peaked overnight and are
decreasing, although a few streams will remain near NWS flood stage
through Sunday morning. Stage-discharge ratings were exceeded at several
short-term streamgages.
A total of two USGS crews (4 staff members) from the Ithaca and Troy, NY
offices made 4 high-flow discharge measurements Saturday for rating
calibration. Rating extensions and additional follow-up discharge
measurements are planned for Monday July 3. All equipment is operating.
