PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (MI) Heavy precipitation affecting a basin in Central Michigan

Summary: Flooding is occurring in part of Central Lower Michigan

Three to over seven inches of rainfall fell over the northern part of the Saginaw River watershed yesterday and last evening. Rainfall fell mainly in a band from Mt. Pleasant northeastward along the Chippewa River toward Midland and to the north into the Tobacco River basin. The Chippewa River is expected to crest this afternoon with moderate flooding while the Tittabawassee River is predicted by NWS to crest at a major flood stage of around 31.5 ft tonight (Period of record is 33.89 ft in 1986). The models are being influenced somewhat by much higher than normal spilling at Sanford Dam hydro.

The USGS office in Grayling has responded to the event and a two-man crew is making streamflow measurements at gages within the Chippewa and Tobacco River basins. The same crew expects to measure Tittabawassee tomorrow morning.

Measurable additional rainfall is not predicted and interaction has been primarily between USGS and NWS.
