Summary: USGS crews deployed statewide in Illinois to respond to continued flooding.
Flooding is continuing statewide in Illinois, with the most significant flooding occurring in Southern Illinois. The flooding is a result of rains that fell April 28-30 during which totals ranged from 2-7 inches with the largest amounts in Southern Illinois
Approximately 44 USGS streamgages in Illinois are above the National Weather Service (NWS) floodstage. Two USGS streamgages are in the NWS Major Flooding category and three USGS streamgages are in the NWS Moderate Flooding category. Moderate flooding is occurring on the Illinois River. All USGS streamgages in the flooded areas appear to be functioning properly. Most streamgages indicate that water levels are cresting or are starting to recede. Another rain system is expected to move into the area in the next three days. The NWS Quantitative Precipitation Forecast indicates another 3-4 inches of rain may fall on already flooded areas over the next three days (http://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/day1-3.shtml).
Eight USGS crews of two people each have been deployed to make discharge measurements and ensure proper streamgage operation at USGS streamgages in Illinois.
Communication is being made with the NWS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other emergency managers as needed.
