Summary: Recent rainfall in the Southeast is causing some streams to reach moderate and major flooding in Virginia and West Virginia.
USGS crews from the Virginia-West Virginia Water Science Center (VAWVWSC) are closely monitoring the flooding situation across portions of the two-state region. Rainfall totals of more than five (5) inches in the past two days are causing moderate and major flooding in the Piedmont region of Virginia and west into the Appalachian Plateaus of Virginia and West Virginia.
Two crews from Richmond, two from Marion, and two from Charleston (11 personnel total) were out yesterday. The four crews from Marion and Richmond (7 personnel total) are out again today. All crews are making high flow discharge measurements at active streamgages and crest-stage gages in the Big Sandy, Guyandotte, Kanahwa, New, Roanoke, and Dan River basins
VAWVWSC will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day and adjust as needed.
