Summary: Recent rainfall in the Southeast is causing some streams to reach moderate and major flooding in North Carolina.
USGS crews from the South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) are closely monitoring the flooding situation across portions of North Carolina. Rainfall totals of more than seven (7) inches in the past two days are causing moderate and major flooding in the Piedmont region of North Carolina.
Primary focus is keeping the gaging network operational since most streamflow ratings were verified during Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. One crew from Raleigh is making high flow measurements at Little River near Zebulon, NC. One three-person crew is in the Yadkin River basin making streamflow measurements. A third crew from Columbia, SC is assisting with gage repairs.
SAWSC will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day and adjust as needed.
