PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) Widespread Flooding in Upstate New York

Summary: Widespread flooding in Upstate New York.

Widespread flooding is occurring in Upstate New York today as a result of 2-4 inches of rain during the past four days and several inches of snowmelt. About 15 USGS streamgages reached the NWS minor flood category in the Susquehanna R, Hudson R, Mohawk R, Delaware R, and Black R basins. In addition, two USGS streamgages: Susquehanna R at Vestal, NY and Susquehanna R at Conklin, NY reached the NWS moderate flood category. Streamflows at many USGS streamgages are near peak or decreasing this afternoon, although several streams will remain near NWS flood stage through Sunday (April 9).

A total of ten USGS crews (21 staff members) from the Ithaca, Troy, and Potsdam, NY offices have made about 35 high-flow discharge measurements today for rating calibration. Additional follow-up discharge measurements are planned for tomorrow (April 8)&#8203;. &#8203;The approximate annual exceedence probability is 0.2 (<5-yr flood). All equipment is operating.
