Summary: Flooding is expected as multiple atmospheric rivers continue to bring heavy rainfall and snow to parts of California today.
Heavy rains fell overnight, with moderate rain, snow, and high winds expected across most of California today. Nearly all of coastal California is under flash flood watch today, with higher elevations under winter storm warning. Statewide, numerous streams predicted to exceed flood or monitor stage today. Currently, 73 percent of USGS streamgages in CA are reporting streamflows more than 90 percent above normal for this time of year. This storm system is expected to move out of California later tonight, with lingering light showers expected tomorrow all along the coast.
The California Water Science Center (CAWSC) has 27 crews responding to this event today from the following service areas: Ukiah, CA (3); Sacramento, CA (5); Santa Cruz, CA (4); Santa Maria, CA (4); Redlands, CA (4); and Poway, CA (7). Crews are performing peak or recessional measurements, high-water mark surveys, and repairs.
The CAWSC hosted a media event today for reporters to accompany USGS scientists and field technician crews as they monitor streamflow and flooding on the San Diego River at Fashion Valley (11023000). Streamflow at this important river forecast site was above monitor stage during this event.
More crews will deploy tomorrow, mostly for service or repairs. No safety issues have occurred during this series of storms and all staff have followed USGS field reporting and safety protocols. Updates will continue to be provided during the course of this event.
