Summary: Heavy rains have ended and flows are beginning to decrease in Western Nevada rivers and streams.
Heavy rains at high snow levels have ended Monday morning in Western Nevada and the Sierra Nevada. Snow levels of 9,000-10,000 ft in the Sierra Nevada have fallen and runoff is decreasing to rivers and streams. Streamflows have peaked at the upstream parts of the Truckee and Carson Basins and the peaks are moving downstream. Some flooding is still occurring in downstream, low-lying areas.
The Nevada Water Science Center has deployed 7 crews to measure the mainstem Truckee and Carson Rivers and several tributaries, moving downstream through the day. Gaging stations have operated well to collect good data throughout this event. No peak flows have reached record levels; annual exceedences are approximately in the 0.10 to 0.05 range for the area (10-20-year recurrence range). NVWSC is in communications with the National Weather Service and several local agencies in Reno, Carson, City, and other locations to provide needed measurement along with other stage and flow information.
