Summary: An atmospheric river is providing heavy, long duration rainfall rainfall and high flows to Western Nevada rivers and streams through Monday.
An atmospheric river is currently providing heavy rainfall at high snow levels to Western Nevada and the Sierra Nevada. The heaviest rains have started on Sunday morning and are expected to last through early Monday. Although snow levels have risen slower than forecasts have predicted, they are currently at about 9,000-10,000 in the Sierra Nevada. Streamflows are rapidly rising and are predicted to peak above flood and monitoring stages.
The Nevada Water Science Center has deployed 6 crews to measure tributaries of the Truckee and Carson rivers this morning. This afternoon, some of the crews will move to measure the mainstem Truckee and Carson Rivers as water levels increase. Additionally, the NVWSC is tracking edges of water along highways using handheld GPS instruments as ground truth information for remotely sensed images. NVWSC is in communications with the National Weather Service and several local agencies in Reno, Carson, City, and other locations to provide needed measurement along with other stage and flow information
