Summary: The USGS VA/WV Water Science Center is deploying storm surge sensors along the Virginia coast in preparation for Hurricane Matthew.
The USGS VA/WV Water Science Center is currently deploying 5 Rapid Deployment Gages (RDGs) and 6 storm surge sensors starting on October 5th. Four field crews, comprised of 8 personnel in total, are carrying out the deployments.
Hurricane Matthew is currently a major hurricane and is heading toward the Atlantic coastline of the United States. While the impacts to the Virginia coast have decreased with recent National Hurricane Center forecasts, the lower Chesapeake Bay and Eastern Shore areas could still experience damaging coastal flooding and erosion.
Deployment activities are expected to be completed on October 6th. Support personnel for coordination and outreach are also active. Sensor recovery will begin as soon as field conditions will allow.
