Summary: USGS Staff from Caribbean Florida Water Science (CFWSC) deployed storm surge sensors (SSS) along the Florida east coast prior to Hurricane Matthew's approach.
Hurricane Matthew, a category 3 Hurricane, is expected to track near the SE Florida coast starting Thursday evening. Hurricane warnings have been posted by the National Hurricane Center from Dade County to Volusia County.
USGS crews from Davie, Orlando, Ft. Myers, and Tampa (30 hydrologic technicians and hydrologists) are deploying over 80 SSS along the Florida east Coast from Miami to Jacksonville and 3 Rapid Deployment Gages (RDGs). Data from the SSS and RDGs will help water managers determine the peak and duration of storm surge as the hurricane approaches and passes the Florida coast.
