Summary: Flooding continues in central North Carolina today.
Flooding continues in central North Carolina today with moderate flooding occurring or forecast according to the Southeast River Forecast Center. Additionally, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for portions of Cumberland, Sampson, Hoke and Harnett counties, where the National Weather Service (NWS) and emergency management officials are reporting dam failure risks due to partial dam breaches or dams being overtopped. USGS has one crew (2 people) in the field today from the Raleigh Office of the South Atlantic Water Science Center measuring streamflow at sites in central North Carolina. Streamflow measurements made yesterday include two measurements at the Little River at Manchester (USGS Station Number 0210300) streamgage where crews measured 9,770 cfs at a gage height of 31.07 feet and 8,900 cfs at a gage height of 30.93 feet. This site recorded a peak of 31.18 feet at 11:00EDT on 9/29/2016, in excess of the 1945 peak of record of 29 feet.
Staff from Raleigh will continue to monitor streamgages in North Carolina and coordinate with the National Weather Service, Southeast River Forecast Center and emergency management community. We are also closely monitoring the forecast track for Hurricane Matthew and its potential impacts on North Carolina.
