Summary: USGS crews continue to respond to major flooding on eastern Iowa streams.
Major flooding is still continuing on streams in eastern Iowa as a result of heavy rains that fell on September 21 and 22, 2016, in northeast Iowa. As the flood crests move downstream on the Cedar River and Wapsipincon River, more communities have been evacuated and schools have been closed according to local news sources ( http://www.kcci.com/news/flood-summary-evacuations-sandbagging-schools-closed/41827778 ). Record levels have been recorded on the Shell Rock River and near record levels on several streamgages on the Cedar River.
Two two-person USGS crews were deployed yesterday and four two-person crews today to ensure proper streamgage operation and make streamflow measurements. An additional two-person crew was deployed today to collected water-quality samples on the Cedar River. All streamgages are working properly. Frequent communication is being made with the National Weather Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and emergency managers.
