Summary: Flooding continues in northeastern North Carolina and Governor has declared a state of emergency in 11 counties.
North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency Thursday for Bertie and 10 other North Carolina counties:Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Northampton, Pasquotank and Perquimans. News reports indicate that at least 65 people have been rescued from floodwaters. Some roads remain impassable , including some highways in Windsor, Edenton and Gatesville.
USGS staff continue to monitor the North Carolina streamgage network and one crew from the Raleigh Office of the South Atlantic Water Science Center is in the Northeastern part of the state measuring streamflow at sites which are peaking or near the peak. The USGS Streamgage on the Cashie River at SR1257 near Windsor North Carolina peaked at about 15 feet, which was only exceeded twice since its installation in 1998, once after the passage of Hurricane Floyd in 1999 (at 18.52 feet) and once in October 2010 (at 15.69 feet).
Staff from Raleigh will continue to monitor streamgages in Northeastern North Carolina and coordinate with the National Weather Service, Southeast River Forecast Center and the emergency management community.
