Summary: Heavy rains bring major flooding to Northeastern North Carolina
Major Flooding In Northeastern North Carolina
Rainfall in excess of 10 inches from September 19-22, 2016 has been reported by the National Weather Service (NWS) in parts of Northeastern North Carolina, bringing flooding to the area as the remnants of Tropical Storm Julia continued to spin off the mid-Atlantic coast. NWS reported an event total of 17 inches of rain for Windsor, North Carolina.
Three crews from the Raleigh Office of the South Atlantic Water Science Center were dispatched early this morning to ensure gages were functional and make discharge measurements in Northeastern North Carolina. Crews measured streamflow of 9,160 cfs on the Cashie River at SR1257 near Windsor at a gage height of 14.89 feet, very near the peak (~15 feet) for the event, which is above the NWS defined Major Flood Stage of 13.0 feet.
Staff from Raleigh will continue to monitor streamgages in Northeastern North Carolina, coordinate with the National Weather Service, Southeast River Forecast Center and the emergency management community and make streamflow or discharge measurements as needed to verify or update stage-discharge ratings.
