Summary: Flood waters have receded but more rain is forecast
Severe flooding occurred Tuesday night, September 13, 2016 over most of
the island of Maui due to intense rainfall. Several homes were damaged or
destroyed in the Iao Valley. Major highways were closed due to landslides
and flood damage. Moderate flooding occurred on leeward Oahu September 14 and 15, 2016.
No field activity on Maui today because highways were impassible most of the day.
Three field crews were deployed on Oahu to make direct measurements and collect
nutrient and sediment samples. Field crews will be deployed on Maui tomorrow.
A flash flood watch is in effect through tomorrow for the islands of Oahu, Molokai,
Maui, Lanai, and Hawaii
The USGS has been in contact with the National Weather Service, Corps of
