Summary: Intense rainfall resulted in severe flooding over much of the island of Maui
Flooding on the island of Maui, September 13 and 14, 2016
Severe flooding occurred Tuesday night, September 13, 2016 over most of
the island of Maui due to intense rainfall. Several homes were damaged or
destroyed in the Iao Valley. Major highways were closed due to landslides
and flood damage.
Two USGS streamgages have new peaks of record. There may be more at
crest-stage gage sites on west Maui but we won't know for sure until
the highway is reopened.
The stream gage at Wailuku River at Kepaniwai park was destroyed and the
crest-stage gages Wailuku River at Wailuku were damaged. The annual exceedance
probability is estimated to be less than one percent at these two gages.
Matt Wong flagged highwater marks at Wailuku River at Wailuku but was unable
to flag at other sites because of road closures. Additional crews will be
sent over to Maui as soon as highways are opened.
The USGS has been in contact with the National weather Service, Corps of
Engineers, and State and County agencies.
