Summary: Two days of heavy rainfall in south-central and southeast Kansas have resulted in moderate flooding in the area.
Two days of heavy rainfall in south-central and southeast Kansas have resulted in moderate flooding in the area. As of 11:00 am CDT on September 10, 22 stream gages in Kansas were above flood stage, including streams in the Wichita metro area.
Basins affected include the Walnut, Whitewater, Cowskin, Ninnescah and Arkansas in the Wichita area, and the Cottonwood, Verdigris, Neosho and Marais des Cygnes in Southeast Kansas. Of the 22 gages at or above flood stage, 16 are considered to have minor flooding, 5 moderate flooding, and 1 is considered to have major flooding (Ninnescah River near Belle Plaine).
Three USGS crews are out measuring stream flows today, and additional staff at the Kansas Water Science Center office in Lawrence are monitoring flows, updating data, and coordinating activities with the US Army Corps of Engineers and National Weather Service.
