PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (HI) Hurricane Lester

Summary: High surf and heavy rain expected as Hurricane Lester approaches the Hawaiian Islands

Hurricane Lester is tracking in a west-northwest direction and forecast to pass
approximately 125 miles north of the Islands of Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Lanai,
and Kahoolawe, beginning Saturday. Lester is a category 2 hurricane with sustained
winds of 105 miles per hour. The National Weather Service issued a statement warning
about significant impact from high surf on east-facing shores and likely coastal flooding.
Heavy rain, 4 to 15 inches is also forecast.

All but one USGS real-time rainfall and stream flow monitoring stations are fully
operational. Sites to flag tide-surge high-water marks have been identified on
the Islands of Hawaii and Oahu. USGS personnel are prepared to mobilize as soon as
it is safe to do so.

The USGS has been in contact with the State and County emergency response agencies
and the National Weather Service.
