Summary: Tropical Storm Madeline caused some damage to the Island of Hawaii and Hurricane Lester is anticipated to have a much large impact to all of the Hawaiian Islands.
Tropical storm Madeline passed to the south of the Island of Hawaii last night.
USGS rain gauges recorded rainfall up to 10 inches which is not unusual for the
Hawaiian Islands. Peak streamflow annual exceedance probabilities were larger
than 50%. Some minor flooding from high tide and tide surge was reported in Kapoho.
All eyes are now on Hurricane Lester which is forecast to pass through
the Hawaiian Islands. The National Weather service reports wind and rain impacts will
begin Friday, September 2, 2016 and continue through Monday, September 5, 2016.
All but one real-time stream flow and rain gages are operational. USGS personnel are
ready to mobilize as soon as it is safe to do so.
The USGS has been in contact with the State and County emergency response agencies
and the National Weather Service.
