Summary: possible flooding as Tropical Storm Madeline crosses the Island of Hawaii.
Hurricane Madeline has been downgraded to a tropical storm
as it moves in a westerly direction across the Island of Hawaii.
Rainfall of 5 to 10 inches is forecast for the next 24 hours.
As of 1600 hours Hawaii Standard time, August 31, 2016,
heavy rain was reported at the Hilo Airport. Fair conditions were reported
at the Kaikua-Kona Airport on the leeward (west) side of the island.
Stream gages on the east and central part of the island are on the rise but
not particularily high.
No information on coastal flooding at this time.
USGS personnel are packed and ready to mobilize if warranted once airports
on the Island are opened.
The USGS has been in contact with the County of Hawaii Civil Defense Agency,
Hawaii County Department of Public Works and the National Weather Service.
