Summary: USGS crews in Iowa are making streamflow measurements at several sites due to more than 5 inches of rain falling in eastern Iowa in the last 24 hours.
Heavy rains fell in central and eastern Iowa during the last 24 hours. Totals in parts of eastern Iowa surpassed 5 inches (http://water.weather.gov/precip/). USGS precipitation gages recorded rapid rainfall rates, over 1.5 inches in an hour at some locations. Some locations in the Iowa River basin are forecasted by the National Weather Service (NWS) to surpass flood stage in the upcoming days.
Three USGS crews have been deployed to make streamflow measurements and ensure proper streamgage operation. Streamflow measurements are being made at locations that have not seen these water levels in the past 4 or more years. Measurements will be used to verify the stage-discharge relation at each site. One stage sensor at a streamgage was damaged and a USGS crew is on site making repairs. Communication will be made with the NWS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other emergency managers as needed.
