Summary: Persistent precipitation in May 2016 has caused on-again off-again minor flooding in eight river basins in Nebraska.
Rainfalls of 2-3 inches on May 26 combined with the persistent rainfalls across the eastern half of Nebraska since May 10 (6-12 inches total) have caused periods of minor flooding in the several river basins (Ponca Creek, Papillion Creek, Weeping Water Creek, Salt Creek, Wahoo Creek, Big Blue River, Little Nemaha River, and Big Nemaha River). Continued rainfalls (some potentially significant) are expected to continue through at least the several days.
Yesterday’s rainfalls caused flash flooding in and around Lincoln. One crew was dispersed yesterday afternoon (May 26) to measure flashy urban streamgages in Lincoln. Four crews are making discharge measurements today (May 27). Since yesterday, fourteen flood or high flow measurements of discharge have been collected, and two check measurements have also been made. All streamgages have maintained operation with no significant loss of data.
Information has been communicated via phone and emails to the USACE, NWS, Nebraska Emergency Response, and the Nebraska Natural Resources Districts.
