Summary: Heavy precipitation during the evening of May 9, 2016 caused minor flooding in two river basins in Nebraska.
A targeted rainfall of up to five inches fell in Southeast Nebraska, causing high flows in the Salt Creek and Big Blue River Basins, including two streamgages going above minor flood stage. Several tornadoes and large hail were reported during the event in and to the east of Lincoln. Significant property damage was reported in southeast Lincoln and eastward. In north-central Nebraska, up to seven inches of rain caused high flows in several river Basins, and minor flooding on Ponca Creek. Three crews (five technicians) were dispersed during the evening of May 9 to measure high flows and repair one streamgage, and four crews (eight technicians) made high flow measurements on May 10. Fifteen high flow measurements were obtained during this event.
Information has been communicated via phone and emails to the USACE, NWS, Nebraska Emergency Response, and the Nebraska Natural Resources Districts.
