Summary: Significant rainfall early this week has resulted in record pools in both Barker and Addicks Reservoirs.
Rainfall amounts of over 12 to 18 inches has resulted in record pools in both Barker and Addicks Reservoirs, located on the west side of the Houston, TX metropolitan area. The Corps of Engineers is responsible for operation of these reservoirs, whose main purpose is to prevent flooding downstream into the City of Houston. However, local officials are concerned about the impacts of the record pools to upstream roads, businesses, and homes. To manage releases from both reservoirs, the USGS has been asked to make special discharge measurements at select locations downstream of both reservoirs.
Beginning earlier this morning, the USGS has 2 crews making discharge measurements at four downstream locations along Buffalo Bayou. Results of these measurements are being provided to the Corps of Engineers, Harris County Flood Control District, and local emergency management personnel.
