PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (CA) El Nino storms return to CA (continued)

Date: Sun, 13 Mar 2016 13:13:39 EDT

Summary: El Nino storms brings precipitation to much of CA this weekend with additional rain/snow expected for Northern CA continuing into Monday.

Northern California is experiencing moderate rainfall and snow accumulations this weekend, with precipitation continuing into Monday. Although no significant river flooding is expected by the National Weather Service, there is potential for localized flooding and an increased risk for mudflows and slope failures. Several rivers are predicted to rise above monitor stage, with only one site (11468000) predicted to exceed flood stage.

Yesterday, the USGS California Water Science Center deployed 3 crews from the Redding and Redlands service areas for high-water measurements and storm water-quality sampling, respectively. Today, 5 crews are deployed from the Redding and Sacramento service areas for high-water measurements. For the one site (11468000) predicted to exceed flood stage, a crew from Ukiah is on standby to measure peak flow as forecasts become more accurate. Several crews may be deployed tomorrow as rivers continue to rise in response to this event. No equipment damage or data transmission issues have been reported as a result of this event. Field offices are in contact with Federal, State, and local water resource management agencies.
