Summary: USGS crews deploy sensors to monitor storm-tide flooding expected along the east coast from the predicted major coastal storm.
In response to the forecast development of a major coastal storm along the eastern seaboard this weekend, the USGS has deployed teams in 5 states to install storm-tide and wave sensors in coastal areas expected to receive moderate to major tidal flooding from this storm.
Currently, the USGS has 19 teams out in the field, and is expected to install about 100 sensors over the next few days from the Delaware coast north to southern Connecticut. A sub-set of these sensors (rapid-deployment gages) will have real-time telemetry capabilities to provide real-time tide and meteorological data where needed, to assist local emergency management and flood forecast efforts.
Sensors are expected to be recovered and processed by the USGS shortly after the storm has passed. Real-time and processed data will be available from the USGS Flood Event Viewer at http://water.usgs.gov/floods/FEV.
