Summary: Levee breaches impacting flows on the middle and lower Mississippi River
In addition to the previously reported levee breaches on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River, Levee have also occurred on the Illinois side of the river. This, in addition to the Missouri levee breaches, resulted in a dip in the stages at the USGS Streamgages at Thebes, IL and Cape Girardeau, IL on the Mississippi River. The forecast crest at Cairo, IL has now been lowered to 56 feet. USGS field crews are making flow measurements at the confluence in support of the Corps of Engineers and National Weather Service to help refine the forecast. At this point in time, operation of the Birds Point-New Madrid floodway is highly unlikely.
