PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (GA) USGS Continues Flood Response in Georgia

Date: Sun, 27 Dec 2015 12:14:12 EST

Summary: Two crews from USGS-South Atlantic WSC making flood measurements in Northwest Georgia on Sunday.

USGS crews are deployed on Sunday, December 27th, in a continuation of the USGS-South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) response to recent rainfall in Georgia.

Two 2-person crews are making flood measurements in northwest Georgia at a number of locations that are approaching their peaks of record, including West Chickamauga Creek, which flows towards Chattanooga, Tennessee.

This is in response to the same widespread rain event that has lingered over the Southeast United States for several days prior to Christmas Day. Rainfall totals range from over 4-6 inches in central Georgia to between 4-7 inches in the metropolitan Atlanta area, to between 10-12 inches of rain in the west-central Georgia. These rains have pushed rivers and numerous streamgages to flood stage and beyond. Yesterday, USGS crews measured critical locations along the Middle Chattahoochee River and several tributaries to the Oconee and Altamaha Rivers.

USACE reports that all reservoirs in the ACT/ACF basin are now full. Because of this, rivers will remain high as they continue to release in anticipation of the next approaching storm. Soil conditions are saturated, which means any additional rainfall will become direct runoff quickly.

Rainfall accumlations in Georgia for past 7 days.
