Summary: Three crews responding to flooding in Georgia
Three two-person crews from the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC)-Norcross Data Unit are responding to flooding across central Georgia and the lower Chattahoochee Rivers.
After at least four days of excessive rains, rivers are above flood stage in many areas and in some cases above ratings at USGS streamgages. In the West Point and Columbus areas in west central Georgia, rainfall totals were between 10-12 inches recorded at the USGS gages in those areas. One crew is measuring at Chattahoochee River at Columbus since Georgia Power reported that they intended to release around 100,000 cfs from their three dams this morning. The crew from the Norcross office will remain their to track the hydrograph back down to the rating.
Another crew from the Norcross office is measuring a number of sites in the middle Georgia that are tributaries to the Altamaha River basin. Some of these stations are above their ratings as well.
A third crew from the Tifton Field Office is measuring the lower Chattahoochee River sites from Omaha and below Walter F. George Dam.
Results from measurements are being uploaded directly from the field and input into the USGS NWIS database for display on the public webpage.
