Summary: Recent rains bring several USGS streamgages over the National Weather Service Flood stage.
Record rain totals have been observed in many locations for December 13 and 14 across Iowa. USGS raingages indicate over three inches of rain has fallen in the last 48 hours (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ia/nwis/current/?type=precip&group_key=county_cd&Access=0). As a result, 16 USGS streamgages are currently above the National Weather Service (NWS) flood stage and the NWS forecasts additional locations to surpass flood stage soon. The areas with the most significant flooding are in northeast and southwest Iowa. The USGS Iowa Water Science Center has deployed 8 field staff to support high water data collection. In addition, 2 office staff are supporting the flood response. Numerous contacts with the NWS and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are planned throughout the event. These contacts are primarily to give streamgage status updates and streamflow measurement results.
