PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (WA) Flooding in western Washington

Date: Tue, 17 Nov 2015 19:37:19 EST

Summary: Flooding on the Olympic Peninsula and in the central-to-north Puget Sound area of western Washington.

A second "atmospheric river" reached western Washington late Monday, Nov. 16, on the heels of a previous atmospheric river. The event is causing mostly minor to moderate flooding on the Olympic Peninsula, with the Elwha River currently (Tuesday, Nov. 17) cresting at major flood levels. Selected rivers throughout the central-to-north Puget Sound area are currently at minor to moderate flood levels, with major flooding in parts of the Skykomish and Stillaguamish River basins.

Throughout the affected area, rivers are expected to crest before Wednesday evening, Nov. 18, and the Snoqualmie and Snohomish Rivers are expected to reach major flood levels.

Five 2-person and two 1-person USGS crews measured high flows in the Snoqualmie, Tolt, Stillaguamish, Nooksack, Calawah, and Cedar Rivers and smaller creeks on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Additional high-flow measurements will be made on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
