Summary: USGS Crews from Four States Continue Response to Historic Flooding in South Carolina.
Two 2-person crews from the South Atlantic WSC (SAWSC) - Raleigh office continue to make flood measurements in eastern North Carolina as flood waters recede. Three 2-person teams are heading to the Outer Banks to retrieve storm-tide sensors deployed for Hurricane Joaquin.
There are currently 18 2-person crews deployed in South Carolina making flood measurements. To date, 110 discharge measurements have been made, with at least 17 of those being the highest ever made at a particular station. Over 30% of the crest-stage gage network has been measured in South Carolina during this event.
The breakdown of crews currently in South Carolina include:
South Carolina: 6 2-person crews
North Carolina: 2 2-person crews
Georgia : 9 2-person crews
Alabama : 1 2-person crew
Six streamgages have been destroyed by floodwaters. Two have been reactivated with Rapid-Deployment Gages (RDGs) from the SAWSC-Norcross office. Four sites remain down.
At least two interviews have been performed, and numerous pictures and video have been posted to the USGS social media pages in cooperation with the USGS Office of Communications. Preparations are beginning for a data report for this event.
Field team coordination continues by leadership in the Norcross, Columbia, and Raleigh offices.
