PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (GA NC SC) USGS Continues Response to Effects of Hurricane Joaquin

Summary: Crews from USGS-South Atlantic WSC continue field operations in response to Hurricane Joaquin.

Three crews from the South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) - Raleigh office have completed the installation of storm-tide and wave sensors, as well as have 4 Rapid-Deployment Gages (RDGs) active, along the Outer Banks and inland bays of North Carolina.

Additionally, crews from the Asheville, Raleigh, and Charlotte field offices are responding to inland flooding across North Carolina.

Six crews from the SAWSC-Columbia office are currently measuring floods all across South Carolina as the rains continue to fall. Several very high measurements have been completed. Roads around Charleston are closed due to high-water. Crews have deployed two RDGs, one near Myrtle Beach and one near Greenville, in support of flood operations.

Eight crews from the SAWSC-Norcross office are currently deployed in western North Carolina and across South Carolina, assisting with flood measurements and sediment sampling. One crew from the Tuscaloosa, AL office of the Lower-Mississippi Gulf WSC are also assisting near Asheville, NC.

Pictures from field operations are being collected and shared with USGS Office of Communications. A media advisory has been issued for the event.

Other crews from the Tifton and Savannah Field offices are on stand-by as the event continues.

Coordination of field crews is managed by leadership from offices in Raleigh, Columbia, and Norcross.
