PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) Response to the coastal effects of Hurricane Joaquin

Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2015 15:35:40 EDT

Summary: The forecast offshore passage of Hurricane Joaquin is anticipated to create surge and wave effects in the coastal and estuarine portions of New York

Event Information:

Hurricane Joaquin is forecast to pass offshore well east of Southeastern New York. The proximity of the Hurricane and stalled frontal boundary is expected to generate tidal flooding and large ocean waves that will affect the region for the next several days.

In anticipation of these coastal concerns the USGS NY Water Science Center has dispatched 4 2-person field crews in coastal sections of Southeastern New York to deploy tide/wave sensors and rapid-deployment gages to characterize the storms effects in the New York area. In addition, one office staff is supporting the storm response. In total, 7 USGS states are responding to this event. Within New York, 15 storm-tide water level sensors, 15 wave height, and 3 rapid-deployment gages are being deployed to record storm conditions.
